A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
